College care packages are a great way to send a little of your heart to a loved one in college. In September, my sister hauled off from home to go to college in Boston. I decided that, along with calls and texts, that she should be able to get a little piece of home while she's away. Here are some great things to send in the package.
Pictures from home/of pets: Before my sister even left for college, she requested that I send her decorated photos to hang above her bed. The process was a little more tedious than I had originally planned, but here's how it went: I printed the highest quality picture that had special meaning onto photo paper (she and her best friend, me and her, our cat, dog, and new puppy, etc.). Then, I placed them onto high quality colorful construction paper and cut them out with decorative scissors. I also sent thin twine ropes and fun clothes-pins to hang them up with. This gift is very personal and will last a long time.
Personalized Item: I picked up a white letter T from Michaels Craft Store and wrapped it in colorful paper tape (very cheap!) to match her room theme. The colors were gold, blue, and a purple. This gift is also very personal, but it took me less than 30 minuted to construct, and it allows them to customize their room in a minor way.
Holiday Packages: This is a fun way to help them celebrate the holidays in their dorm rooms. I sent a halloween package filled with the following from Target (our favorite place to shop):
Caramel Apple Pops
Black socks with pumpkin details
Decorations for her door
A bag of Halloween candy
We send her seasonal packages (fall, winter, summer, spring), as well as packages for big holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, and her birthday!
A Card: One way to give them something that will last a long time (but is easy to display/store) is a card. It can be homemade or store bought, but always make sure to include a heart felt message to let them know you're thinking about them!
Something for their Roommate(s): My sister's dorm is a forced triple, so she shares a space with two other girls. A way to reach both your loved one and get to know their new friends is to send them a little something. I could just be a card, or it could be a small gift. It may be wise to contact your loved one in advance so you don't send something their roommate will dislike.
Gift Card: These don't necessarily have to be inexpensive (you may choose what amount), but it can be for anything. My sister is in a hub of fun restaurants, but many are expensive. So, we've sent her some gift cards for restaurants that can be a little pricey. After all, college students aren't exactly the wealthiest on the plant, and sometimes a special dinner can do them some good. Especially when they don't have to pay for it.
There you have it! A small list of inexpensive things to put in a college care package. Remember, nothing has to be flashy or pricey, it only has to be from the heart :)
